MANYWHERE is a new gallery in Porto, a hybrid space that will combine an exhibition space and the studio of Malaysia-born artist, Lian Ng, who left the United States two years ago to settle in Portugal. MANYWHERE – Many Faces, Every Where – aims to showcase the work of Lian Ng, and many more. With the emotional map built over the years, as well as his connections with other international artists, MANYWHERE sets the tone for this collaborative space that celebrates faces, places, techniques, and memories from around the world.

Artist Statement 

My background in Mathematics and Computer Science influences my art and design, which often incorporate mathematical algorithms, typography, and architectural references. I’m particularly drawn to the boundaries from which forms emerge—the perimeters that define shapes—and the generative patterns that allow simple elements to evolve into complex systems. This fascination with structure, order, and variation informs much of my creative process.

Most of my work begins with an underlying formal structure—often rooted in logic or geometry—but intentionally resists becoming rigid. I aim to balance precision with spontaneity, allowing each piece to retain a sense of organic fluidity. In this way, my practice is a dialogue between the analytical and the intuitive, the constructed and the accidental. Whether through repeating motifs, algorithmic structures, or grid-based layouts, the work reflects a quiet tension between control and openness—between rule and resonance.

Artist Biography 

Lian Ng grew up in Malaysia before moving to the U.S. for his studies. He started as a graphic designer in print collateral, branding, packaging, retail graphics, and environmental design. He has worked with brands such as RH, Uber, Nike, Kohler, and Starbucks. In addition to being a designer, Ng is an artist working in printmaking and watercolor. His work tends to lean towards Abstract Minimalism and the Concrete Art Movement. 

Ng’s design and artwork has been recognized internationally and is in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Academy of Art University San Francisco, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts China, Tipoteca Italiana di Cornuda Italy, Biblioteca Civica di Rovereto Italy, Archivio Tipografico di Torino Italy and Druckwerk Basel Switzerland. His work has won numerous awards and has been published in the Type Directors Club, Print International, and Communication Arts. Ng has participated in various artist residencies that have taken him to Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Cuba, and the Netherlands. 

Lian Ng’s international artist residencies inspired a visit to Portugal in 2021. A year later, the process of relocating began, and since 2023, Porto has become his new home. Drawn by its natural and historic beauty—timeless, abundant, and quietly powerful—Ng finds daily inspiration in the city’s textures, tones, and compositions. Each walk from home to studio offers effortlessly poetic moments. Porto’s layered history, intricate design details, and understated magic continue to inform and shape his evolving artistic practice.

MANYWHERE é uma nova galeria no Porto, um espaço híbrido que conjuga um espaço de exposição e o atelier do artista plástico nascido na Malásia, Lian Ng, que deixou os Estados Unidos há dois anos para se instalar em Portugal. MANYWHERE – Many Faces, Every Where – tem como objetivo dar a conhecer o trabalho de Lian Ng, e de muitos outros. Com um mapa emocional construído ao longo dos anos, bem como as suas ligações a outros artistas internacionais, MANYWHERE dá o mote para este espaço colaborativo que celebra rostos, lugares, técnicas e memórias de todo o mundo.

Declaração do Artista

Formado em Matemática e Ciências da Computação, Lian Ng revela frequentemente na sua arte e design algoritmos matemáticos, tipografia e referências arquitetónicas. Com um fascínio particular pelos limites de onde as formas emergem—os perímetros que as definem—interessa-lhe essencialmente os padrões generativos que permitem que elementos simples evoluam para sistemas complexos. A sua profunda admiração pela estrutura, ordem e variação orienta grande parte do seu processo criativo.

Geralmente, o seu trabalho começa com uma estrutura formal subjacente—frequentemente enraizada na lógica ou geometria—que vai resistindo intencionalmente à rigidez, procurando equilibrar precisão com espontaneidade. Cada peça mantém uma fluidez orgânica e ritmada. A sua prática estabelece o diálogo entre o analítico e o intuitivo, o construído e o acidental. Seja através de motivos repetitivos, estruturas algorítmicas ou composições em grelha, o trabalho de Lian Ng reflete uma tensão subtil entre controlo e abertura; regra e ressonância.

Biografia do Artista

Lian Ng cresceu na Malásia antes de se mudar para os Estados Unidos. Começou a sua prática como designer gráfico, trabalhando essencialmente com materiais impressos, branding, embalagens, grafismo para retalho e design ambiental. Durante este período, colaborou com marcas como a RH, Uber, Nike, Kohler e Starbucks. Além de designer, Ng é artista e tem vindo a explorar técnicas como a gravura e a aguarela. O seu trabalho aproxima-se do Minimalismo Abstrato e do Movimento de Arte Concreta.

Os seus projetos já foram reconhecidos internacionalmente e chegaram a integrar as coleções permanentes do Museu de Arte Moderna de São Francisco (SFMOMA), da Academy of Art University, em São Francisco, da Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, na China, da Tipoteca Italiana di Cornuda, em Itália, da Biblioteca Cívica de Rovereto, em Itália, do Archivio Tipografico de Turim, em Itália, e do Druckwerk Basel, na Suíça. O seu trabalho foi publicado em plataformas como a Type Directors Club, Print International e Communication Arts. 

Depois de várias residências artísticas em Espanha, Itália, Suíça, Cuba e Países Baixos, foi em 2021 que Lian Ng decidiu visitar Portugal. Um ano depois, começou o processo de mudança e, em 2023, o Porto tornou-se na sua nova morada. Atraído pela beleza natural e histórica da cidade—atemporal, abundante e discretamente poderosa—Ng encontra inspiração nas texturas, tonalidades e composições do Porto. Cada caminhada entre a sua casa e estúdio proporciona-lhe momentos poeticamente espontâneos. As camadas históricas da cidade, os detalhes intricados do design e a magia discreta da Invicta continuam a influenciar e a moldar sua prática artística em constante evolução.
