With her installations, sculptures and graphic work, Katie Lagast conjures up a world of her own that challenges the viewer to take nothing for granted. While intuitively making visual notes of a desolate urban environment, Lagast preserves fragments of time and space that few other people would notice.
She finds her inspiration on the ground: cigarette butts, cracks, weeds, the pavement, a cobbled street and the sunlight that sweeps over it in the late afternoon. However simple her sources of inspiration may seem, Lagast transforms them into aesthetic, contemplative objects thanks to a thorough formal analysis and her admirable eye for detail.
By taking photographs of a particular moment or making silicone moulds of a particular place, Lagast rescues her personal observations from oblivion. But she only shares her impressions with her audience after a long and thorough search for the right materials and reproduction techniques. She leaves nothing to chance.
Lagast is not only romantic, she also likes to challenge the viewer’s perception. She cherishes underappreciated aspects of life and brings them to the fore in such a way that they can no longer be ignored.
Underlying this complex and varied oeuvre is a strong connecting paradox: there is nothing trivial about life, but people tend to allow themselves to be distracted by paying too much attention to banalities. Lagast constantly challenges us to question what is really worth our time—and to do so again and again...
